In 2077, local mechanic Dexter DeShawn hires V and Welles to steal a mysterious bio-chip known to be a relic of the Arasaka corporation. After acquiring the relic, the plan goes awry when they unwittingly witness the assassination of the megacorporation’s head, Saburo Arasaka, by his treacherous son Yorinobu Arasaka. Yorinobu covers up the murder by claiming that his father was poisoned and sets off a security raid in which T-Bug is killed by Arasaka’s net runners. V wakes up and is haunted by the digital ghost of legendary rock star Johnny Silverhand, who is believed to have died in an attempted thermonuclear attack on the Arasaka tower in 2023.
However, the process destroyed the target’s brain, after which Arasaka kidnapped Cunningham and forced her to develop her own version of Soulkiller. Silverhand led a rescue mission to save Cunningham, but was unable to find her before Arasaka used Soulkiller against her. Silverhand tried to retaliate with a thermonuclear attack, but Arasaka captured him and used Soulkiller against him as well. In 2077, Arasaka has gained enough experience in using Soulkiller technology to publicly announce the “Secure Your Soul” program.
Arasaka stores the acquired Soulkiller brains in his digital fortress Mikoshi. Eventually, V decides to attack Arasaka’s tower to remove Silverhand from his body with Soulkiller.

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions received “mixed to terrible reviews.”
At the time of its release, the game had already been heavily criticized for its poor optimization on Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One respectively. On these platforms, the game had various types of bugs and glitches that affected gameplay during play. Due to several such issues and criticisms, Sony decided on December 19, 2020 to remove the game from the digital PlayStation Store and offer refunds to players who had purchased it, as did Microsoft, which also offered refunds.
The game was scheduled to return to the PlayStation Store on June 21, 2021, with players warned of performance issues and invited to play the title on the PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation 5 consoles.
